How To Make a Gingerbread House

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought I would share with you another seasonal illustration. This one was for a Christmas card for the Yellow Bird Project in Montreal. They are a not-for-profit organisation that sells t-shirts designed by musicians. Part of the profits from their sales go towards charitable organisations.
And in case you are still looking for a fun activity to fill those long days between Christmas and the New Year, here a few tips on how to make your own, long-lasting gingerbread house:

Create the basic shape out of foam board and cover with paper.

Add texture to the door by carving strips of balsa wood, and cut out some icing from stiff paper.

If you add a layer of thin foam board behind the icing, it will cast a nice little shadow onto your house.

For the roof cut out circles of foam board.

Glue the circles onto the roof and cover the circle edges with brown paper.

Cut out circles of paper and glue onto the foam board circles.

Create details.

Add roof and door to your house.

And don’t forget the Christmas tree!
